Postcard Handwritten Correspondence: Hi Mary, Well I have to quit my job and come back home, Because I got DRAFTED. I will write to you and I would appreciate it IF you would write to me so it won’t be so lonely. I hope you are doing good in school which I know you are, Because your Mother & Dad are GREAT. There really nice People To Talk Too. Well Mary, I hope to write, and I will Tell you my address. OK. in the Army, LOVE Bobby.
The young man that wrote this card was most likely in his early 20’s, and drafted into the United States Army to serve in the Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War era, between 1964 and 1973, the U.S. military drafted 2.2 million American men out of an eligible pool of 27 million. The military draft brought the war to the American home front. In July 1965, President Johnson attempted to explain the need for increased military intervention in Vietnam, in a press conference President Johnson announced that draft inductions would increase from 17,000 to 35,000 per month. In January of 1962 the United States of America advisors in the field of Vietnam was 746, and in seven years the American troop strength peaked at 543,400.
